Overview

In a bid to prove that you really can get something for nothing, Gok Wan has reopened the Fill Your House For Free shop in Glasgow – and has stocked it from floor to ceiling with furniture all of which has been sourced for free. Each day Gok will invite a family to embrace upcycling and prove to them that, with a bit of inspiration, perspiration and determination, you really can transform your house without breaking the bank

Each day Gok will challenge his crack team of upcycling experts to produce three brilliant and bespoke items for our family. The team comprise Max McMurdo, a pint sized designer with a passion for taking everyday items and transforming them into amazing pieces of furniture. Max is joined by Jay Blades, who uses an amazing eye for colour to transform drab and unloved items into objects of desire and Nessa Doran O’Reilly – a woman so obsessed with restoring furniture to its former glory that she refuses to throw away even a scrap of old wood.

19 – 25 Aug: Episode 16

In need of Gok’s help today are a great family – dad Zahid, mum Sameena, and their 3 kids, Haris, Amber and Naail who live in West Acton, London. This family love being together so much, that their house has pretty much taken a back seat. In the words of Haris “It’s a dump”. A tad harsh maybe, but the place does lack the character that this vibrant family deserve. So Gok plans a massive injection of fun by, firstly, totally transforming the sitting room / dining room. Nessa is on the case making the most ingenious coffee table that also separates to become 3 storage cubes. And Jay wants to really fill the place with bespoke colour, so enlists all 3 children to make a piece of wall art. And nothing is too crazy. Gok also wants to turn their dumping ground of a study back into a place for the kids to do their homework. Cue Max, who wants to make 3 chairs for the children that transform into blackboards for the wall. Will Gok and his team be able to rise to the challenge set by this family?

Both agree however that change is needed in their eldest son, Maxwell’s room which is dull and dark and needs a drastic overhaul. The children’s playroom isn’t much better; it’s devoid of furniture with all the toys scattered over the floor.
