Overview

In a bid to prove that you really can get something for nothing, Gok Wan has reopened the Fill Your House For Free shop in Glasgow – and has stocked it from floor to ceiling with furniture all of which has been sourced for free. Each day Gok will invite a family to embrace upcycling and prove to them that, with a bit of inspiration, perspiration and determination, you really can transform your house without breaking the bank

Each day Gok will challenge his crack team of upcycling experts to produce three brilliant and bespoke items for our family. The team comprise Max McMurdo, a pint sized designer with a passion for taking everyday items and transforming them into amazing pieces of furniture. Max is joined by Jay Blades, who uses an amazing eye for colour to transform drab and unloved items into objects of desire and Nessa Doran O’Reilly – a woman so obsessed with restoring furniture to its former glory that she refuses to throw away even a scrap of old wood.

02 – 08 Dec: Episode 1

In need of Gok’s help today are deli owners Gelsomino and Kristine from St Albans – a big family with a house that’s stuck in a rut. While their house is perfectly liveable, it’s far from being the heart of a big Italian home and is unsuitable for entertaining – something Gels and Kris have a passion for. So the order of the day is a makeover for the dining room, which needs a table fit for feasting at; plus an overhaul of a listless living room. To complete the makeover, the utility room, currently a dumping ground for everything needs clever storage solutions to make it fit for purpose. Will Gok and his team be able to rise to the challenge?

Episode 2

Today Gok will be helping devoted husband and wife team Dianne and Terry who have both beaten cancer in the last few years. Originally from Liverpool but now living in Yorkshire this couple love to ruffle each other’s feathers. Dianne is after a calming bedroom where she can write when her MS is bad, some help to inject some style in the living room, and something different in the dining room. Terry just wants to keep hold of his favourite armchair, a piece of furniture he’s determined to be buried with.

Episode 3

In need of Gok’s help today are young couple Amy and Rory who live in a rented flat in London. These guys ooze creativity – Rory is a musician and composer, and Amy is a designer. The great news is that they both love preloved and second hand, but the bad news is that they pay for it! So Gok wants to encourage these guys to gain the confidence to do it themselves! So the plan is to make over the sitting room, which needs an injection of their personality so Jay wants to inspire them with a mood board so Amy can create swatches of colour and patterns. We’re also going to look at their kitchen which, again, doesn’t live up to their personality, so Max wants to create a cool freestanding storage system out of some old scaffolding boards. And, to complete the makeover, the bedroom is in need of a theme, so Nessa is on hand to create an ingenious lamp that will display Amy’s beloved shadow puppets. Will Gok and his team be able to rise to the challenge set by this creative couple?

Episode 4

Today Gok and his team are springing to the aid of single mum of two Eva from Hemel Hempsted. As well as bringing up two kids aged 20 and 8, Eva works with troubled young people, trying to steer them back onto the straight and narrow and has very little time to herself – regularly getting up at 4am in order to do her work out tapes and have a bit of ‘me time’.

She’d like some help bringing her lounge up to date as it’s currently 50 shades of brown. Her bedroom is also uninspiring – it’s not exactly a nice place to relax, she’d love to carve a niche of peace in the chaotic household that can be just hers. Episode 5

Looking for assistance today are Kate and Jay from Stevenage. This caring couple are stuck in a council house straight out of 1970. Student and Events Worker, Kate suffers with ME and needs assistance to turn the living room into somewhere she can rest when she suffers an attack. This room is in dire need of an overhaul. There are no carpets and the walls are covered in peeling 70s wallpaper – not the kind of place for a young family. And the dining room is also a disaster – Jay’s knees don’t even fit under the dining table and the place looks like a bomb site.

Gok and his team are going to have their work cut out transforming this house into a home. They’ll need to use every trick in the book to drag this house into the 21st Century and give it some serious style.

Episode 6

Today Gok and his team face a tough test when young husband and wife team, Sara and Ryan come to the shop. Despite the arrival of a baby boy 7 months ago, they’ve worked like dogs to get their Edwardian semi renovated and need a bit of help to get it finally finished. They’re a couple who love upcycling and have excellent taste so the team will have to be on their game if they’re to satisfy them.

On the list are an overhaul of their bedroom which is drab and uninspiring. An overhaul of the loft conversation so Ryan’s mum has somewhere to hang out when she comes to stay. And last but by no means least, an office for cycling nut Ryan to work in when he’s at home.

Episode 7

Today the team will be tying to help a young family from West Yorkshire. Terri and Russell met through a mutual love of horses and bought their 1930s bungalow with a view to completely overhauling its nicotine-stained interior. Two years and two children later, the house is much as it was and they desperately need a makeover for their drab and dowdy bedroom, the lacklustre lounge and hellish hallway. Will Gok and his team be able to fulfil this nature loving couple’s brief of ‘bringing the outside in’ without breaking the bank?

Episode 8

Today’s family in need of help are Alice and Richard from Chiswick in West London. With Richard working 2 jobs, plus three kids to bring up, time to make their terraced house into a lovely house have taken a back burner. But the time has come for action. So Gok and his team will set about transforming 2 children’s bedrooms, plus a spare bedroom for when family come to visit. With the kids coming first for this family, the team create some fun pieces for them, but the most stunning transformation is on a free valet stand for the spare bedroom. Cool, contemporary and very practical. But best of all: free! But will Alice and Richard, and the 3 kids love what the team have done?

Episode 9

In the Fill Your House For Free shop today are Luke and Sophie from Aldbrough in Humberside. They’re young parents with a second baby on the way and desperate for some help with their house. 4 years ago they bought two run down cottages with the ambition of knocking them together to make a forever home, but with a young family and Luke’s job off-shore, there has been little time to do much more than make the place liveable. They desperately need Gok and the team’s expertise to transform their son Toby’s bedroom which is unfinished, get the nursery ready for their new arrival and transform their loft space into somewhere baby clothes designer, Sophie, can sew in.

It’s going to be a big challenge – especially as the team have next to no budget to transform this house.

Episode 10

Today Gok is coming to the aid of Lancaster couple, Hannah and Alex. Hannah and Alex met at university in Wales through a mutual love of musical theatre. They bought their house, with the plan of decorating it from top to bottom, however their plans were thrown into disarray by the arrival of their daughter two years ago. With no time and little money these two need the team’s help to transform their dining room into a place to entertain and enjoy, their bedroom into an oasis of cultured calm and the spare room into a man-cave where sci-fi geek Alex can wallow in his collection of Space based toys and trinkets.
