Britain has some of the most historic houses in the world; from Victorian to Art Deco, there are different architectural styles on every street. But the way houses were built years ago just doesn’t work for us today, what should we chuck, and what should we cherish? What modern styles work in period properties? In this series architect George Clarke gets under the skin of homes with history to unlock their potential creating stylish solutions making them fit for 21st century living.

22-28 Feb: Episode 3

George visits Ben at his ground floor apartment in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. George’s challenge is to turn a grand drawing room with sea views into a cool, elegant kitchen-diner and create rich, opulent schemes for a bedroom and study.

Episode 4

George helps Leicester couple James and Drew restore their period house, reclaiming its classic Georgian dimensions and features. In Brixton, a Victorian living room has had all its period features replaced with 70s kitsch and fake Tudor.

Episode 5

NEWQUAY In this art deco special, George takes on a challenging period property in Newquay, Cornwall. When Gareth and Frances Jenkins bought an ugly-looking pebble-dashed bungalow, they had little idea of the house’s astonishing history.
