Toasted Ham and Gruyère Sandwich
Makes 1 sandwich
This is a classic combination, and I think it makes the ultimate TV supper. This recipe makes enough for one sandwich, but you can easily make more for a crowd!
- 2 slices of white bread, ciabatta or sourdough bread
- Softened butter
- 2 slices of ham or, even better, glazed bacon
- 2–3 slices of Gruyère cheese
- 1 tbsp wholegrain or Dijon mustard
- Lay the slices of bread on a work top. Spread one slice with butter, add a layer of ham, then the Gruyère cheese. Spread the other slice of bread with the mustard and place on top of the ham, mustard-side-down. Spread some butter on the top of the sandwich.
- Place a frying pan on the heat and straight away put the sandwich in the pan, butter-side-down. Place a saucepan lid on the pan and cook over a medium heat for about 3–4 minutes, until golden on the underside. Spread a tiny bit of butter on the top and flip over. Cover again, turn down the heat and cook for another 3–4 minutes until golden and the cheese is just melted. Remove from the pan and serve.
Rachel’s handy tip
To make a lot of these I would cook the sandwiches in a hot oven for 8–10 minutes, which is far more convenient than cooking them one by one in a frying pan.
