Requirements
- 1 Tablespoon unflavored gelatin
- 2 ½ tablespoons water
- A wide flat soft brush
- Food coloring (air Brush colors or liquid colors dissolve better)
- Microwave
- Mixing bowl
- Paper clips
- Scissors
- Silicone mat
- Small spatula
- Veining sheet
Instructions
- Step 1:
- Place water in a microwaveable bowl. Sprinkle Gelatin over the top and stir together, and then let it stand for a few minutes. This is called blooming.
- Step 2:
- To warm and clarify the gelatin, place the mixture in the microwave for 10 – 15 seconds at a time
- Sit after each interval until the mixture is liquefied and thoroughly warmed, make sure all the gelatin is dissolved.
- Once dissolved to a liquid, let it still to allow the foam to rise to the top (this may take 10 – 20 minutes depending on how hot the gelatin was) then gently spoon this foam away. (This may need to be done a few times depending on the gelatin as different grades will produce more/less foam then others.) When gelatin is clear with the foam removed, reheat and add desired food color. The gelatin may be rewarmed if it becomes thick while painting it onto the veining sheets.
- Step 3:
- Use a wide, flat, soft brush to paint the entire texture sheet while trying to maintain an even coat over the whole sheet. If you are having trouble getting the entire sheet covered before the gelatin becomes to thick you may need to either warm your gelatin slightly or lay the textured sheet on a heating pad set on WARM while brushing the gelatin on it. Allow gelatin to dry for about 6 – 7 hours until it pops off the veining sheet.
- Step 4:
- Making the bow loops
- Using a scissors, cut strips of gelatin sheet to desired width (generally between 1 -5 cm) then cut the strip in half, length-ways. Bend each strip into a loop adding a small amount of warm gelatin liquid at the end for glue.
- Secure the end with a paper clip to hold in place until it dries (about 15 minutes).
- Repeat the process to complete 12 – 14 loops.
- Remove the paper clips and cut the glued end at a 45 degree angle on each side to form a point allowing for easy construction of the bow.
- Step 5:
- Forming bow
- On a silicone mat, palce a coin-size drop of warm gelatin.
- Add 6 bow loops in a circle like a clock – 12:00, 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, 8:00, & 10:00
- For the second row, add 4 – 5 bow loops using warm gelatin as glue. Brush the end of each bow loop with the warm gelatin, placing on top of the first row.
- For the final Layer, repeat process adding 3 more loops.
- After the bow dries you can add ribbon trails or other embellishments if desired.
- Place it on your cake for a beautiful and trendy effect.
