As most Americans grind away in an office, many of us daydream about what it would be like to drop off the grid and live a simpler life. Unplugged Nation viewers will follow a family who is looking to leave their city life behind and take the leap into off-grid living. In each episode, a new family will view three properties in the area they would like to live in and they will get to select one dream home try out the “unplugged” way of life for three days. Guided by off-the-grid expert, Jay Gruen, the families will learn what it takes to live this new lifestyle– from growing their own food, to running their own electricity to fending for themselves– then they will decide whether they can hack it off-grid or need to move back to the city.
Episode 1: Hawaiian Dream
The Bastelli family from New Jersey want to move off grid. Jason, Stacy and their two children, Jason Jr (10) and Justin (3) have never lived outside the city before. They view three off grid properties Hawaii and have to choose one to stay in for three days. Will they decide to stay unplugged in Hawaii or plug back in?
Episode 2:Washington State Challenge
Californian girl, Allyson, wants to start an unplugged life with her new partner, Nels, and her two children. They view three properties in Washington State and have to choose the one they want to stay in to experience off grid living. After three days of living unplugged, will Allyson and her family choose to buy the off grid property or not?
Episode 3: Off Grid in Oregon
Former photographer, Courtney and graphic designer, Shaun, want to start a new unplugged life with their four young children. After viewing three potential properties they have to choose one to stay in and test out living off grid. Courtney wants to learn how to become self-sufficient but after three days unplugged grid will they decide to buy the property or not?
Episode 4: Escape from Suburbia
Musician, Angela Cross and writer, Daniel Klayton, from LA, want to set up their first home together unplugged in Washington State. After viewing three properties in remote locations they have to decide which one they want to stay in for three days. But after their time unplugged will they decide to make the move or not?
Episode 5: Island Paradise
The Jevens family from Washington DC want to move to Hawaii and become self sufficient. They view three off grid properties on the Big Island of Hawaii and have to choose one to stay in for three days. Will they decide to stay unplugged in paradise or plug back in?
Episode 6: New Life Off Grid
The Card family from Texas want to move to North Carolina and start a new unplugged life. First they view three off grid properties and move into one of them for three days to test unplugged living. Will they choose to buy the property after three days or will they move back home?
Episode 7: Group Living Off Grid
A group of four young people have decided to leave their city lives and move off grid to set up a new unplugged existence together in Tennessee. Some of them have never even met before! After viewing three properties in remote locations they have to decide which one they want to stay in for three days. But after their time unplugged will they decide to buy the property or not?
Episode 8: Life on the Edge
The Saint Pauls family want to move from Baltimore and start a new unplugged life in North Carolina. First they view three off grid properties and move into one of them for three days to test unplugged living. Will they choose to buy the property after three days or will they move back and plug back in?
Episode 9: Idaho Idyll
This Episode of ‘Unplugged Nation’ follows the Knight family as they leave behind the humid hustle of St. Louis for the clear air and pristine wilderness of central Idaho. In search of a new home and a new way of life, the Knight’s, are hoping to escape utility bills and live sustainably off the grid; but this is no ordinary property show. As well as viewing three beautiful properties to match their budget and needs they will also have a small taste of the life they hope to lead. Guided by the Unplugged Nation resident expert and mountain man,Jay Gruen, the Knights get straight into the action by taking up residence in an isolated riverside cabin accessible only by boat. With electricity limited to a couple of hours a day, undrinkable water running from the plumbing and just a goat and chickens for company the family pull together and learn hands on that living unplugged is a tiring and scary, especially with three young boys
