This week on Show Me How, we take the art of crotchet to a whole new level. Janice Gutscher of Tarn Yarn SA shows us how to create different household items, such as a homely rug, using this versatile material known as Tarn Yarn.

Abbreviations:

SC – Single crochet
Blo – Back loop only
Flo – Front loop only

Requirements [1]
  • 7mm x 7 m sashcord
  • 1 bobbin Tarn
  • 1 giant sewing needle
  • 1 pair of scissors
Instructions [1]

Step 1: First Round – Make 8 chains

First round:

  • Place your chains on one side of the rope with your tarn strand on the other side of the rope
  • Slipstitch the first stitch around the rope
  • Sc in the next 6 chains around the rope
  • 4 sc into the 8th chain for the corner

Step 2: Second Round

  • sc  8 stitches blo
  • 2   sc into 9th stitch
  • 2   sc into 10th stitch
  • 2   sc into 11th stitch
  • sc  7 stitches blo
  • 2   sc into 20th stitch
  • 2   sc into 21st stitch
  • 2   sc into 22nd stitch
  • 2   sc into 23rd stitch

Step 3: Third round              

  • sc  7 stitches blo
  • 2   sc into 8th stitch
  • sc into 9th stitch
  • sc into 10th stitch
  • 2    sc into 11th stitch
  • 2    sc into 12th stitch
  • 2    sc into 13th stitch
  • sc  7 stitches blo
  • 2    sc into 21st chain
  • 2    sc into 22nd chain
  • 2    sc into 23rd chain
  • 2    sc into 24th chain
  • 2    sc into 25th chain
  • 2    sc into 26th stitch
  • 2    sc into 27st stitch

Step 4: Fourth round                        

  • sc  10 stitches blo
  • 2    sc into 11th chain
  • 2    sc into 12th chain
  • 2    sc into 13th chain
  • 2    sc into 14th chain
  • 2    sc into 15th chain
  • 2    sc into 16th chain
  • 2    sc into 17th chain

sc  11 stitches blo

Change the angle of your work and start doing the side panel with 49 sc flo repeat 6 x for the sides crochet from the inside of the basket

Step 5: Handles

*16 stitches into the last round lift your rope and sc 10 stitches around the rope reattach your side leaving 8 stitches open* – repeat * *for the other handle 16 sc, cut Tarn and rope and work in loose Tarn into the side of the handle.
