Overview

Healthy Home Chef is Neven Maguire’s seventh Home Chef series, and as the title suggests, Neven’s recipes are healthy – no refined sugar was used in the recipes for this series.

Each programme is based around a health theme (for example fitness, strength and coping with stress) and each week, Neven cooks with a guest that is relevant to the theme. The series was filmed at the Airfield Estate near Dundrum.  The Airfield Estate is a 38 acre working farm, which is open to the public, and whose purpose is to educate people about food and where it comes from.

Episode 1

In the first episode, Neven cooks with Olympic silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan and finds out what she ate on the day she won the medal, and how her diet has changed, now that she is no longer competing professionally, and with two teenage daughters to cook for.

Episode 2

This week’s theme is Food on the Go and perfect for popular TV presenter Daithi O’Shea who is a very busy man, commuting from Galway to Cork almost every day to present the Today show.

Daithi likes cooking, but has very little time so  Neven shows him how to cook Lamb Chops and Butterbean Stew,and Daithi impresses Neven with his knife skills!

Other dishes this week include Turkey and Orzo Broth, Butterbean and Bacon Broth, and Smoked Haddock Hash.

Episode 3

In this programme Neven shows us how to make a wholesome Crispy Salmon with Pomegranate and Watercress Couscous. Proving that desserts can also be healthy and nutritious, he prepares two dessert recipes; Crème Pots, and Hot Cakes with Banana and Mango.

Neven’s special guest this week is the acclaimed psychologist Maureen Gaffney who explains how cooking good food and eating around the table as a family can help reduce stress levels. Maureen is a passionate cook, and shares one of her favourite healthy recipes for Middle Eastern Chicken.

Episode 4

In this episode, Neven shares two tasty and wholesome lamb recipes: a Greek Lamb Mezze, and a Seared Lamb Fillet with a Blue Cheese Dressing.

He also prepares a healthy version of Chicken Goujons. In this programme Neven visits the prestigious DCU GAA Academy and meets some of the country’s most talented GAA players.

DCU takes great pride in offering students healthy, nutritious food throughout its canteens. The university’s Executive Chef Peter McGillicuddy teaches Neven and some of the health conscious students from the GAA Academy, how to cook a Beef and Rice Stir Fry.

Episode 5

Neven’s special guest this week is Denise O’Callaghan from the Delicious Gluten Free Bakery in Cork.

Denise gives Neven some tips on gluten free baking and shows him how to blend gluten free flours to make the pastry for a wholesome Bacon Quiche.

This week Neven shares some more healthy recipes and shows us how to make Irish Hake with an Asian Twist, and a Red Thai Pork Curry.

Episode 6

In this programme Neven shares more of his healthy recipes: Beef Kofta with Chickpea Flat Breads, and also Paella.

Neven’s guest this week is Tommy Bowe, one of Ireland’s leading national and international rugby players. From the Six Nations to the Rugby World Cup, Tommy plays at the highest level and eating healthily is essential. Neven shows Tommy how to cook a nutritious Beef Tagine and learns all about his extraordinary sporting career.

Episode 7

In this final programme, Neven shares more of his healthy recipes: Stuffed Aubergines with a Spinach and Feta Pie, and a Healthy Pork Goulash with Cauliflower Rice.Neven’s special guest this week is Indy Power, one of Ireland’s most successful food bloggers. Indy’s blog The Little Green Spoon is full of recipes that are nutrient-rich, gluten free and refined sugar free. Indy shows Neven how to make some of her favourite recipes: a Cacao and Chia Seed Buckwheat Granola, and a Spiced Carrot and Sweet Potato Soup with Turmeric, Garlic and Cumin.
