Chalk Paints

On today’s episode of Show Me How Gloria Bastos is joined by Trudie Ayers of Mulberry Lane. And they’ll be introducing us to the benefits of using multi-purpose Chalk paints. First they show us the different techniques that can be achieved using this paint and then later they transform an ordinary chest of draw into something extra-ordinary.

Requirements

Instructions

Step 1: Paint the unit inside and out with a light colour in Chalk Paint and let it dry. You could layer two colours like an Old White & Country Grey as this will make the distress technique look better.

Step 2: In order to achieve a distressed look, you need to sand the edges of the wood lightly to reveal the colour underneath. Do so with a 100 grit sheet of sand paper.

Step 3: Wax the unit with the Annie Sloan Clear wax. Remember to use it sparingly and light even coats. Use a clean rag to wipe off the excess wax, if you find the wax is still sticky just wipe more off.

Step 4: The chest of drawers is now ready to be embellished with stickers, stencils or flowers.

Chalk Paint Finishes

Requirements

Instructions

For this project we showed you 3 different techniques that can be achieved using the Annie Sloan Chalk paints.

1. A smooth finish that you can stencil on or decoupage on: This is the smooth and one color technique for Chalk Paint. The paint is applied with a paint brush – one or two layers, and can be sanded in between the two layers to get a smooth look, sand with 100 grit sanding paper.

2. Two colour distressing: In this technique two colours are layered, it’s best to use two different colours for contrast. We used Old White & French Linen. Wait for the first coat to dry, and then paint second colour over the dry first layer. When this is dry – sand the top layer to reveal the first colour. This chalk paint is very soft so try not to press too hard as you will sand away both layers.

3. Texture paint to age wood with dark wax:  Annie Sloan Chalk Paint can be texturized to a greater or lesser degree. Layer the paint thickly on the wood to prevent running of paint, blast with a hairdryer and texturize the paint with a brush or your fingers.

Note: The above techniques need to dry when you are finished. When it’s completely dry apply the soft clear wax with a soft cloth or sponge. If you want an aged look, wipe off the excess clear wax and apply the dark wax over it. It’s very important to apply the wax sparingly in an even coat.
